Any idea why Volume for either SP500 or DJIA isn't displayed in a chart?

I can't get ^VIX data at all.

Which downloader are you using?

Volume for indices is available. Please get the new version of the default downloader from:
Historical Stock Market Data

Regarding the VIX, select "Symbol -> Add", type "^VIX" then click on "Add". After that you can download data for CBOE VIX.
